A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:

For numerous years, Ohio State has conducted the Ohio State University Campus Transportation Survey; a collaboration between the City & Regional Planning of the Knowlton School of Architecture and the Department of Transportation & Traffic Management (TTM). A key objective of the survey is to collect data that informs policy, evaluates trends in usage of alternative transportation modes, lessens congestion and pollution, and addresses safety concerns. The Survey was administered online in late 2019. A web-based survey was chosen because of its ease of delivery to a largely online population. Email addresses were provided by the Office of Human Resources (13,577-Staff; 3,655-Faculty), and by the University Registrar’s Office (23,410-Undergraduate, 1,630-Professional, and 5,550-Graduate). This randomly selected sample corresponded to 48.0% of campus faculty, staff, and students. A total of5,097 responses were received: an overall response rate of 10.7%. Of 5,097 respondents who began the survey, 4,051 respondents completed it, for a completion rate of 79.5%.
