Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Compost Program Expansion Phase 1
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Ohio State’s Compost Program Expansion led by Facilities, Operations, and Development (FOD), in collaboration with Student Life, Athletics, Wexner Medical Center, the Sustainability Institute, and many student groups, enabled the university to develop a robust organics collection program to divert material from landfill. University communications departments such as A&P Communications, assisted with crafting and disseminating messages to educate the nearly 100,000 individuals who visit campus daily about participating in the expanded composting program. Organics, including food scraps, paper towels, napkins, compostable packaging and serving ware, and animal bedding, represent the largest category of our campus waste stream, composing about one-third of the waste generated on campus. This expanded program set us on course to limit what goes to landfills, combat climate change, enhance soil and protect water, and build community and food system resilience.
