21.50

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

Now in its seventh year, the 2017 Ohio State University Campus Transportation Survey is a collaboration between the City & Regional Planning section of the Knowlton School of Architecture and the Department of Transportation & Traffic Management (TTM). The purpose of the survey is to provide university leadership with critical data on the travel patterns of the campus community, including mode choice, trip and scheduling habits, and attitudes towards bicycle and transit usage.

Data collection started on November 14, 2017 and ended on November 28, 2017. The survey was distributed by email to a stratified random sample of approximately 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students; and an additional 10,000 faculty and staff members. A total of 5,292 respondents initiated the 2017 Survey, and 4,976 respondents fully completed the 2017 Survey, equating to a completion rate of 16.5%.

The Campus Transportation Survey is administered online. A web-based survey was chosen due to its relative cost, as well as efficiency improvements in terms of ease of data entry and simplicity of the tabulation process. Email addresses were requested from the Office of Human Resources (for faculty & staff) and the University Registrar’s Office (for students); and the randomly selected samples they provided corresponded to roughly 54.1% of the campus population.
