Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
On March 24th, 2017, Ohio State launched a year-long research project by incorporating a hydrogen fuel cell bus into the Campus Area Bus System (CABS). A partnership with SARTA (Stark Area Regional Transit Authority) and Ohio State’s Center for Automotive Research will allow important data to be collected on the vehicle’s performance in everyday use on the campus streets, in hopes of leading to a cleaner campus in the future. This bus was the first of ten that SARTA plans to acquire, made possible by federal and state funding. Its bright blue exterior highlights the innovative technology it uses, engaging the entire campus and encouraging questions to be asked about its groundbreaking machinery. Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen into energy that powers the bus. The exhaust of the bus is potable water, rather than environmentally harmful emissions. This program highlights Ohio State’s commitment to sustainable technology and demonstrates how the school engages with not only its campus, but the surrounding city and companies within it.
