A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
Wellness Ambassadors serve as a liaison between the Office of Student Life and other students on campus. Wellness Ambassadors play a vital role in supporting the mission of Student Life, which aims to promote wellness among Ohio State students and their communities. Wellness Ambassadors deliver educational presentations in a variety of settings and work together to plan, publicize, and implement events highlighting the 9 dimensions of wellness including: Emotional, Career, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, Physical, Financial, Creative, and Environmental. One peer-to-peer outreach activity happens at the Student Wellness Center’s livewell hut where students are queried to sort different items into categories of: recyclable or not recyclable. Upon sorting, the Wellness Ambassadors give students creative tips on ways to reuse different items, provide an information flier(s), and typically a giveaway item as well.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
Students can submit an application for the Wellness Ambassador Development Program. In order to submit, student must meet certain criteria including having a 2.5 GPA or higher, be a full –time student at Ohio State, strong communication skills, and an ability to commit a minimum of 3 volunteer hours each week. Upon completion of the application students go through an individual interview and group interview process.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
Students go through an 8 week long development program that equips them to be successful Wellness Ambassadors. Students will learn about their personal wellness, have a better understanding of Student Life Student Wellness Center resources and knowledge of other campus resources, take a strengths assessment, learn presentation and facilitation techniques, and practice public speaking.

A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):

Residence Hall Sustainability Chairs

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):
The purpose of the program is to educate and promote environmental stewardship to the residents of residence halls. Each residence hall, or complex, has a Sustainability Chair. The Chairs, which are residents of the community that they serve, are responsible for attending separate monthly Sustainability Chair meetings, creating and hosting one educational and outreach program per semester, and gaining the support of other residents to form that hall’s “Green Team”.

Each residence hall has a student government body called Hall Council. The Sustainability Chairs are appointed members of the Hall Council Executive Board.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach (2nd program):
Chairs are required to attend a fall training meeting in which they review the program expectations, and the mechanics of how future events can be completed successfully. The training is facilitated by full time staff members and a graduate assistant from Student Life Energy Management & Sustainability. The Chairs receive additional content-specific information throughout the academic year during their monthly meetings, and via e-mail. In addition, the residence hall staff members, as well as other Hall Council executive board members, provide support for programming.

The Hall Councils gain funding through the Residence Hall Student Government Activity Fee. The Sustainability Chair programs and events receive funding from the Hall Council.

Recycling Games

Twice a week during the academic year, student staff set up an educational table at different residence halls to educate residents about the recycling guidelines at the Columbus campus of The Ohio State University. Recycling education is accomplished through a game in which participants guess what items are recyclable on campus. As an incentive to play the game, the participants receive candy. Student Life EMS also posts weekly content on our social media accounts (Twitter and Facebook) to reinforce the recycling messaging. During FY17, the student staff from Student Life Energy Management & Sustainability (SL EMS) hosted (29) games; with direct participation from 872 residents.

The student educators are student staff members from Student Life Energy Management & Sustainability.

The students are trained by Student Life Energy Management & Sustainability full time staff, and by fellow students. During the training, the students learn about recycling guidelines for the university and the City of Columbus. They also gain an understanding about how to address common questions and concerns that residents may have.
