The Sustainability Plan was developed under direction of the President and Provost’s Council on Sustainability, which employed advisory groups composed of various stakeholder. Throughout the process, input and assistance was provided by a full cross-section of the university, within all divisions (Athletics, Student Life, Medical Center, Academics and Administration) and across all constituencies (faculty, staff and students).

The university has established a number of measurable goals with metrics as key sustainability indicators. These include mitigation of GHG emissions, bio-diversity, potable water consumption, waste minimization and diversion.

Multiple rating systems are used as benchmarking tools for Ohio State’s sustainability progress, as well as comparisons to other institutions that are exemplary, of similar size, or in the Big 10. Rating systems include the Green Report Card and AASHE STARS.
