A brief description of the methodology used to determine the total number of courses offered and to identify sustainability course offerings, including the definitions used and the process for reviewing and/or validating the course inventory :
The course inventory is a subset of information obtained from the listing of courses taught during the 2015-2016 academic year. The course listing included the subject, number, title, and description. Study abroad courses, internship courses, honors courses, technical (ATI) courses, and research courses (independent and group studies, undergraduate and graduate research, thesis research and dissertation research) have been excluded.
Transformation of a manually line delimited listing was exported from an email format to an excel spreadsheet that took into account various functions such as replacement of the line delimiting and removal of a space between the course abbreviation and number. After completion, it was examined using the “vlookup” function in excel to reference against the Columbus inventory of sustainability courses resulting in the above figures. The Columbus inventory was created first by conducting a comprehensive word search using 110 keywords that relate to any environmental, economic, or social component of sustainability as defined by the Earth Charter. The word search identified 5,586 courses that were evaluated further according to AASHE STARS criteria for sustainability courses and courses that include sustainability. The final selection of sustainability courses was reviewed and approved by the Sustainability Curriculum Ad-hoc Committee.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
