Has the institution implemented technologies or strategies to reduce the environmental impacts of snow and ice removal?:
Yes

A brief description of the snow and ice removal program, policy, or practice:

As far as new technology for snow and ice removal, we use two Snow Dogg spreaders on John Deere gators for sidewalk deicing and a bed spreader on the back of the Ford dump truck. When new parking lots are added we are required by the EPA to put in grass barriers to filter out sediments and other contaminants.

We use rock salt on our parking lots and roadways. The product is not wasted and only applied when really needed. Our sidewalk de-icing we use magnesium chloride. This does not cause the sidewalks to breakdown like rock salt does. As far as any chloride liquid brine applied before storms this is not part of our program. We try to brush the sidewalks of any snow instead of putting magnesium chloride down. We only use magnesium as needed.
