Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The diversion rate is significantly higher than the last AASHE STARS submission. In 2014, Marion launched a partnership with Sims and Marion Correctional Institute to reach zero waste targets. All solid waste materials are then sent to a centralized collection dumpster on campus provided by Sims Brothers Recycling, which the company transports to Marion Correctional Institution (MCI). MCI prisoners working at the correctional facility recycling center sort through refuse to maximize the amount of waste material being recycled and composted to minimize the campus’ ecological footprint. The current, more thorough sorting process has resulted in a substantial diversion rate. In addition, the campus launched a zero waste campaign to inform students, faculty, and staff on the efforts.
