Does the institution have a wilderness or outdoors program that organizes hiking, backpacking, kayaking, or other outings for students and follows Leave No Trace principles?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the program:
The campus has a program of Outdoor Pursuits which provides:
1. instruction
2. outings
3. campus programs and events
For the enjoyment and education of the campus community in the outdoors.
Areas of instruction and outings for fall and spring semester will include:
1. basic and family backpacking
2. advanced ultra light backpacking
3. skydiving
4. rock climbing
5. whitewater rafting
6. day hiking
7. archery
8. bow and gun hunting
9. nordic and alpine skiing
10. mountain biking
The aforementioned programs/activities represent both what we are going to be doing as well as what we have been doing over the last decade. The program list stays mostly the same and the changing student population is what dictates which programs come off the ground but we continue to start each year offer the full slate of activities. Regarding the 'leave no trace' it is a component in my backpacking class but with regard to the general P.O.P (Programs of Outdoor Pursuits) programs our trip leaders do preach and practice a leave no trace philosophy:
● Plan ahead and prepare
● Travel and cap on durable surfaces
● Dispose of wast properly
● Leave what you find
● Minimize campfire impacts
● Respect wildlife
● Be considerate of other visitors
