NYC Department of Environmental Protection Water Challenge
A brief description of the campaign:
New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Vincent Sapienza today announced the launch of the New York City Water Challenge to Universities. This is the fourth of New York City’s sector specific Challenges and builds off the success of previous Challenges to hotels, restaurants and hospitals. As part of the Challenge, the six participating universities will work to reduce their campus-wide average water consumption by 5 percent, which would be a savings of approximately 1.3 million gallons of water per month. The New School worked with students to create outreach materials that were not only shared internally but also used a model for other universities.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Participation in the challenge led to a 5% reduction in water usage between August 2019 to July 2020
