A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
The New School offers the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies as part of the university's suite of cross-divisional interdisciplinary undergraduate programs, designed to prepare our students for the new careers of the 21st century. This innovative program is administered by the Tishman Environment and Design Center. The program brings students beyond natural ecology and resource conservation to focus on urban ecosystems, sustainable design, and public policy issues like global warming.

The New School has always been proactive in responding to the great social issues of the day, and our commitment to environmental responsibility is in keeping with that tradition. The Environmental Studies curriculum is designed to allow undergraduates to study and work at the intersection of society and nature. Our innovative courses capitalize on the expertise of the university's faculties of social science, design, management, and urban policy.

Parsons Sustainable Cities Minor

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
This minor looks at the social sustainability of urban life, community-based design practices and processes, and the multiple scales of the modern city. In the minor, the environmental resilience of cities is regarded as an essential element of urbanism. Students learn design process and methodologies, including sketching, drawing, and making, along with diverse ways of learning about and engaging in the urban space. The minor anticipates collaborative community-based initiatives and activity, as well as creative explorations at multiple physical and phenomenal scales.
