4.1 Sustainability culture assessment design and administration

We used the Sustainability Attitudes Scale by Zwickle and Jones.

Description of the institution’s recent sustainability culture assessment findings and any notable trends:
We surveyed 22 students in an upper level Environmental Studies course. Of 242 data points (11 questions times 22 students) only 7 total data points disagreed with the sustainability perspective, meaning students agreed with the sustainability perspective 97% of the time. The total average score was 5.5 out of 6, with 6 indicating strong agreement with all sustainability questions. Obviously this is a biased sample (students only in an environmental studies course), but it does show strong agreement with sustainability perspectives.

The assessment can be easily replicated in the same course next year in order to measure sustainability attitudes among environmental studies students over time.
