The Energy Project

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Catholic University began a three-phase energy project in 2016 to modernize the way the majority of buildings on campus are heated and cooled. The Energy Project converted the former steam-based heating and cooling system to a more efficient hot/chilled water system. The drastic renovation has changed the energy distribution and improved efficiency at the campus Power Plant. In addition, the more efficient hot/chilled water loop has lowered operating costs, reduced heating and cooling losses saving the University in utility costs, and helped the University meet its broader sustainability goals.

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Catholic University was certified as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists in 2019. Catholic University joins an elite group of 222 colleges and universities in 47 states and the District of Columbia that are taking action to address the health and environmental challenges facing America by creating campuses more welcoming to people who bike.

A New Community Garden

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
During the 2020-21 academic year, Catholic University’s Student Government Association created an environmental initiative. The initiative appointed an initiative director and three associate directors to act as liaisons with the Facilities Management and Operations office to collaborate on sustainability and student engagement strategies. Establishing a community garden was a top priority for the environmental initiative. The initiative started a pilot garden in March 2021 that had a successful first season and expanded in March 2022. The community garden allows any community members to foster a raised bed plot for a growing season. The garden is managed by garden liaisons who help educate other students, faculty, and staff on how to manage their plots.
