In the University's Strategic Plan, Strategic Goal 1 ensures that every aspect of the University is clearly and distinctively grounded in our Catholic identity. To achieve that goal, Initiative 1.a.vii states that Catholic University strives to be leaders in a cohesive and coordinated effort toward environmental stewardship in keeping with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Additionally, all undergraduate students complete the Liberal Arts Curriculum as the core of their studies at Catholic University. The Liberal Arts Curriculum includes a requirement for students in every major to take one course in Foundations in Natural Science, which may include a course in Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Physics, or Psychology.

The total number of graduates from degree program data was pulled from the National Center for Education Statistics 2020 data. The number of graduates from degree programs that require an understanding of the concept of sustainability data was sourced from Deans or Associate Deans and represents the class that graduated in 2021.

A list of degree programs that require an understanding of the concept of sustainability:
Undergraduate Programs include: Environmental Studies Major, Environmental Chemistry Major and Minor, Environmental Engineering Major, Civil Engineering Major - Environmental Engineering Track, Mechanical Engineering Major - Energy and the Environment, and School of Architecture and Planning Sustainability Minor.
Graduate Programs include: School of Architecture and Planning Net Zero Design.
