A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

Because of the availability of information, the faculty research report considers faculty participating in sponsored research. The researcher population used in our analysis reflects researchers that currently have active research and/or have been part of research within the past three years (August 1, 2019 – August 1, 2022).

Using the Texas A&M System Budget, Payroll, and Personnel system and the Texas A&M System Research Information system, all tenured/tenure track and research faculty were identified to provide the total number of faculty performing research. The 71 keywords used in Credit AC-1 were used to search the sponsored research database for faculty research proposal/project titles, and existing project abstracts as an initial sorting method.

To further refine the researcher inventory, Office of Sustainability (OS) staff reviewed faculty biographies and research interests available online at Texas A&M departmental websites. All entries in the database were reviewed.

Because only sponsored research was reviewed for this credit, the total number of researchers is a conservative estimate. Additionally, since Texas A&M (TAMU) is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution, we have numerous faculty that hold joint appointments with Texas A&M Agricultural, Texas Transportation Institute, the Texas Water Resources Institute, and Engineering Extension Agencies. Our database review only considered researchers who were primarily affiliated with TAMU. As a result, this reduced the total number of researchers by 204. Additionally, 27 Researchers were removed due to Missing/Incomplete data. After the revision identified above, 606 out of 1,181 sponsored researchers (51%) conducted sustainability research over the past three years.

To determine the number of departments that conduct sustainability-related research, the list of researchers and their departments was compared to the 92 equivalent departments identified in credit IC-3; however, there were 8 equivalent departments that were excluded because they represented interdisciplinary programs or institutes. 4 Colleges were excluded because they offer courses through those equivalent departments, but research is through departments already included. The Department of Ecology & Conservation Biology was recently disbanded, and the data used here reflects that change, while the data used for IC-3 does not. It was replaced by two new departments that have been added to the list for this credit only. TAMU Libraries are not included in IC-3 because they do not have course offerings but are included here due to sponsored research occurring. Veterinary Large Animal Clinical Services is not included in IC-3 but is included here due to missing data from IC-3. Based on the discrepancies described above, the total number of equivalent departments will be 83 for this credit. 60 out of the 83 equivalent departments (72%) coded for this credit conduct sponsored sustainability research at TAMU.
