A brief description of the student research program, including the incentives provided and any positive outcomes during the previous three years:
TTU Water Center; Center for the Management, Utilization & Protection of Water Resources - The goals of the Center are to enhance research by addressing diverse water-related problems in Tennessee, the nation and the world; to enhance educational opportunities through research, university instruction and educational outreach; and to enhance citizens’ quality of life by providing technical assistance and technology transfer to peers, citizens and industries. A graduate student this past year at Tennessee Tech presented her dissertation titled: “Linking Diversity of Polyphosphate Accumulating Organisms to Improved Functional Stability of the Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Process.” This project was made possible due in part to this program.

Center for the Management, Utilization & Protection of Water Resources-
Incentives include potential funding to pursue related research.
Phillip Bettoli, Biology professor and assistant unit leader of the Tennessee Cooperative Fishery Research Unit (TCFRU), and his research team including Mark Rogers, unit leader of the TCFRU, are involved in several projects related to the protection of endangered and threatened fish species. The following are summaries of some of those projects:
Sampling and Population Characteristics of Bighead Carp and Silver Carp in the Tennessee River and Cumberland River Systems, Assessment of Blue Catfish and Channel Catfish Populations in Tennessee Reservoirs, Movements and Lock and Dam Passage of Asian Carp in the Tennessee River, Relative Population Densities of Asian Carp in the Tennessee River and Cumberland River Drainages, Effect of Asian Carp Invasion on the Food Web of a Mussel Biodiversity Hotspot in Tennessee.

Located on the third floor of the Angelo and Jennette Volpe Library is the iCube. The iCube provides a place for students and faculty to imagine, inspire, and innovate, using immersive reality technologies in a three-dimensional environment. This space is a learning tool that has taught students about river ecosystem conservation as well as alternate energy sources. The iMakerspace is also located on the third floor of the library and it offers 3D printers that are used in research for our Environmental Engineering students and professors.
