3.1 Student participation in governance

Does the institution have one or more ongoing bodies through which students can democratically participate in the governance of the institution?:
Yes

Narrative and/or website URL outlining the ongoing bodies through which students can democratically participate in the governance of the institution:

The Technological Universities Act 2018 specifies the mandatory requirement of student representation on Governing Bodies within Technical Universities (including TU Dublin). Furthermore, the TU Dublin SU website lists a variety of bodies/committees (non-exhaustive) on which they have student representation.
The Student Union (SU) President shall be the chief spokesperson for the Union, representing all students of the University, and shall be, ex officio, a member of the University’s Governing Body and Academic Council. Article 7.1.2 of the SU Constitution (Ref1).

As of 20 Feb 2025, O’Toole, Shauna (SU President), Aguele, Princewill (SU VP for Events and Engagements), and Meya, Avice (Post Grad Student member) are two of the student members in the governing body: (Ref 2, Ref 3)

The Technological Universities Act 2018 specifies the mandatory requirement of student representation on Governing Bodies within TU's (including TU Dublin).

Yes

Description of other mechanisms used to consult students on institutional decisions, plans, or policies:
Students in TU Dublin sit on a wide variety of formal committees, working groups, and engage in University-owned surveys on a regular basis. Student representation is virtually always filtered through the Students' Union.
Students are engaged in various university groups: USC; Green campus; Student finance committee; Research ethics committee; EUt+ Governing Body

3.2 Academic staff participation in governance

Does the institution have one or more ongoing bodies through which academic staff can democratically participate in the governance of the institution?:
Yes

Narrative and/or website URL outlining the ongoing bodies through which academic staff can democratically participate in the governance of the institution:
TU Dublin has an Academic Council made up of academic staff, both elected and nominated by virtue of their academic roles. As noted on this web-page (Ref 1) : "The Academic Council is the statutory body charged with establishing and maintaining the academic standards and enhancing the quality of the student experience of the University. All members of Academic Council and its Committees, whether elected or nominated, serve under terms and conditions established in the Technological Universities Act 2018. Subject to the 2018 Act, the Academic Council shall regulate under the Terms of Reference its procedures and business."

Yes

TU Dublin's highest decision-making body is Governing Body. This includes both student and staff members, including two academic staff members as voting members (Ref 1). Membership profiles (Ref 2).

Description of other mechanisms used to consult academic staff on institutional decisions, plans, or policies:
The University committee that decides on resource allocation is the University Executive team, which has five academic Deans on the group (Ref 1).
TU Dublin academic staff are actively consulted on decsions via multiple goverance committees, such as Faculty and School Boards, the academic quality processes and procedures, e.g. Academic Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee (Ref 2).
TU Dublin also has a strong trade union for academic staff which is consulted on relevant decisions as a social partner (Ref 3).

There is membership on Governing Body specifically reserved for a TU Dublin non-academic (i.e. professional services) staff member (legislated within the TU Act 2018). As of 20 Feb 2025, non-academic and academic staff that are members of the Governing Body are:

Yes

TU Dublin Sustainability Office members participate to sustainable energy communities (SEC) sponsored by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) such as SEC of Phisborough (Ref 1) and the Bohemian Football Club (Ref 2), of Cabra (Ref 3), and of Stoneybatter (Ref 4 and Ref 5); SEC members can then raise interests, needs, concerns and requests for help to the Grangegorman Development Agencies and TU Dublin functions (e.g Sustainability Office, Estates and Campus Planning) to develop collaborative strategic actions.

The Stoneybatter SEC "Cosybatter" is engaged with the Grangegorman Development Agency (managing TU Dublin City - Grangegorman campus) and TU Dublin Estates & Campus Planning, Decarbonisation and Sustainability Intelligence for the provision of renewable energy that may be produced from TU Dublin Grangegorman geothermal project and distributed to loac communities through TU DUblin district heating network. In other words the community have a direct voice into the planning of such decarbonisation project.
