Description of the methodology used to gather data about student commuting:
A national survey is conducted by the National Transport Authority (NTA) every two years. The survey is open for answers for approximately 2 weeks. The university locally push students and staff to answer the survey. The NTA then share back the information collected for each university. The summary of the 2022 survey are available here (Ref 1). In 2022, 15% of students (as a Head Count, not FTE) and 35% of staff (as a Head Count, not FTE) have answered the survey. Overall 17% of the staff and student population (as a Head Count, not FTE) completed the survey. This percentage of participation is the highest in all Ireland. The modes of tansports that were included ), “Mainly work or study remotely”, “On foot Bicycle (push bike)”, “Bicycle (e-bike)”, “Bus, minibus or coach”, “TU Dublin shuttle bus”, “Luas Train or DART”, “Motorcycle or scooter”, “Driving a car alone”, “Lorry or van”, “Driving a car with passenger(s) going to same destination”, “Driving a car with passenger(s) going to different destination”, “Passenger in a car with driver going to same destination”, “Passenger in a car with driver going to different destination”, and “Taxi”. The last 5 options could then be consolidated into a single answer defined as “Private Car Shared trip”. We note that electrical cars and motorcycles have not been distinguied from cars and motorcycles in the 2022 survey.
