7.1 Organized sustainability research center, institute, or unit

Does the institution have at least one organized research center, institute, or equivalent unit that is focused on sustainability and/or integrated approaches to address sustainability challenges?:
Yes

List and description of the institution’s sustainability research units:

TU Dublin has 5 research hubs (Ref1) regrouping units (laboratories, research groups, and institutes) which all address sustainability topics from different perspectives, covering various SDGs. This is further made evident via the TU Dublin Research & Innovation Strategy (Ref2). We have two research Hub focused on sustainability and integrated approaches to address sustainability challenges.
Hub 3, Sustainability & Health (Ref3) addresses SDG 2, 3, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16.  The hub research sustainability topics such as water, food, energy, health, and policies.
Hub 5: Culture and Society (Ref4) addresses SDG 4, 5, 8, 10, 15, 16 with research on culture, innovation and inclusivity in a changing society. There are 7 main research areas: creative and performing arts; education; media studies; digital studies; digital humanities; sustainable tourism and food; and equality, diversity and inclusion. The hub includes the European Culture and Technology Lab (Ref5) that is a collaborative research institute affiliated with the European University of Technology (EUt+; Ref6) serving as a vital platform for interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and innovation at the intersection of culture, technology, and society within the European academic landscape. EUt+ is itself a European Alliance of 9 universities in 9 EU countries to form the first European University of Technology. EUt+ includes various Research Institutes with TU Dublin being a member. ECT Lab is led by TU Dublin. In addition, the EUt+ Green Office co-led by TU Dublin is conduction various research sustainability focused projects based on STARS framework.

Does the institution have at least one organized research center, institute, or equivalent unit focused on a subject other than sustainability that produces sustainability research?:
Yes

List and description of the institution’s research units focused on subjects other than sustainability that produce sustainability research:

TU Dublin has 5 research hubs (Ref1) which all address sustainability topics from different perspectives, covering various SDGs. The following hubs focused on subjects other than sustainability that produce sustainability research.
Hub 1: Health Engineering & Materials Science (Ref2) that has 12 thematic areas and 8 cluster groups tacking research associated to SDG 3, 9, 11, 12. Health research topic include bioengineering; physical exercises and nutrition; interactions between pathogenic bacteria and human cells to better understand diseases and develop antimicrobial therapies; future skills of agriculture and manufacturing; and to undertake and translate scientific research on sport into practice with communities. Material topics include material characterisation and process analytical technology services to pharmaceutical industries; the design and synthesis of new molecules; and research in inorganic and organic synthesis, and in molecular recognition.
Hub 2: Digital Futures (Ref3) tackles research on SDG 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13. The centre conduct research in the computer, mathematical and engineering sciences, bring expertise from legal, regulatory, ethics and social sciences, and apply research in application domains such as healthcare, physical sciences, finance, education, agriculture and energy.
Hub 4: Physical to Life Sciences (Ref4) tackles SDG 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 15  with Radiation and Environmental Science; nano material characterisation and the analysis of the interaction of Nanomaterials with biological systems, both mammalian and aquatic (fresh and marine water) systems; dedicated surface coatings laboratory with environmental impacts; and holographic and interferometric techniques and has developed novel technologies with applications in product authentication, sensing, vibration measurement and optical device fabrication.
