A brief description of the sustainable food and beverage purchasing program:
Certified organic bread is occasionally purchased.
Local food includes the following:
All tomato products - Red Gold Company - Orestes, IN (25 miles) – distributed from Alexandria, IN (25 miles)
Apples (in season) - Heinlein Orchard
Watermelons (in season) – Upland farmer - <10 miles
Honey – local bee farm – (20 miles)
Hard ice cream – Glover’s Ice Cream - Frankfurt, IN (65 miles)
Some bread - Aunt Millie’s Bakery - Fort Wayne, IN (60 miles)
Most meats - Muncie Meats – variety of Indiana farms
Most produce - Piazza Produce – distributed through Indianapolis, IN
80% of food is purchased from Gordon Food Service located in Grand Rapids, MI. This is located 230 miles from Upland, but we decided not to count this food because most of it comes from far away from this distribution point.
