Has the institution banned or eliminated the on-site sales and distribution of at least one type of single-use disposable plastic?:
Yes
A brief description of the single-use disposable plastics that have been banned or eliminated:
The Queensland Government announced a single-use plastic ban https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/management/waste/recovery/reduction/plastic-pollution/single-use-plastic-products-ban. This ban, on the supply of single-use plastic straws, stirrers, plates, unenclosed bowls, and cutlery, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) takeaway food containers and EPS cups started in Queensland on 1 September 2021. Further bans will commence in 2023.
TAFE Queensland's Robina Campus has a no-plastic policy. We procure sustainable and compostable single-use food and beverage packaging for the Seedpod Café. The preference is for customers to bring their keep item, but if this is not possible then we want to use a product that will fit the closed-loop system. Regular signage and updates are used to remind staff and students about this approach.
Products purchased in take-away containers or PET bottles can be tracked through the point of sale. Measures are conducted within waste management through the utilisation of segregated bins - landfill, 10c refundable, compostable organics, and other recycling. The number of consumable items (coffee cups, pet bottles, and take-away containers) are discarded after a single use. A discount is offered to every keep item brought into the Seedpod Café for the product purchased. The discount is attached to a hot beverage, cold beverage, or container for food that has been saved from a single use. This information is readily available in reports on a daily/monthly and yearly basis.
