In the spring of 2023, Syracuse University committed to drastically reducing its use of single-use plastics by the 2027-28 academic year. In the spring of 2024, Sustainability Management published a Plastic Reduction Plan. The plan explains how single-use plastics will be categorized, measured, and ultimately phased out. It also touches on the educational aspect of proposal disposal techniques and outreach. The University has already made progress in converting single-use plastics to alternative materials.

Sustainability Management is focused on reducing energy usage across campus. A benchmarking study was completed and helped identify the most energy-intensive facilities. Higher energy users include many lab and research facilities. Sustainability Management uses this data to identify projects that will significantly reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Energy tracking software is also used to measure and track reductions in utilities and metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e). The table below identifies project savings in MTCO2e.
