Local advocacy

Does the institution advocate for public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability at the municipal/local level?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:

Through the Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse University routinely carries out educational advocacy and engagement activities associated with sustainable public policies, to include economic and workforce development, at the municipal level.

Educational advocacy and engagement activities include meeting with local elected representatives such as the Onondaga County Executive, Mayor of Syracuse, members of the Syracuse Common Council; participation in and/or membership on various civic, community and neighborhood organizations and boards such as the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board and the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency; establishment of shared services agreements with the City of Syracuse; hosting public forums; inviting sustainability experts to speak at campus events, submitting statements into the record at public hearings, making formal comments on proposed regulations and more. Examples of public policy sustainability issues the University has engaged on in the last 3 years include: capital construction/updates on campus, renovation of the Syracuse University Stadium,  renovation of the Schine Student Center; maintenance of Syracuse City parks and recreation areas; and local rezoning regulations in and around the Syracuse University campus


Examples of public policy sustainability issues the University has engaged in in the last 3 years: 

Empty Bowls - receive a delicious bowl of soup prepared by Syracuse’s finest restaurants, you'll also bring home a unique handcrafted ceramic bowl created by local potters. There are always hundreds to choose from!

All money raised is donated to the Interreligious Food Consortium, an umbrella agency assisting food pantries and meal sites throughout Onondaga County.

Thursday Morning Roundtable This weekly civic engagement program features experts speaking on local, state and national issues of concern to the Central New York community. The Thursday morning meetings, held during the academic year, feature:

  • a presentation about an issue or topic of general interest, and
  • a question-and-answer session led by the speaker

Regional advocacy

Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:

Through the Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse University routinely carries out educational advocacy and engagement activities associated with sustainable public policies at the state level.
Educational advocacy and engagement activities include meeting with elected representatives and staff members in the New York State Assembly, New York State Senate, Office of the Governor and Lt. Governor, and various NYS Executive Branch departments; legislative proposals; providing information for legislative hearings; pursuit of funding opportunities that support sustainability academic programming, research and recapitalization of physical infrastructure.

Examples of public policy sustainability issues/legislation the University has engaged on in the last 3 years include wastewater legislation; support for appropriate funding levels in the NYS budget for the Syracuse University Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems Innovation and the CASE Center/CAT (Center for Advanced Technology); support for full funding of Bundy Aid, TAP expansion to include eligible InclusiveU students, and the New York State Higher Education Opportunity Programs;  legislation of student-athlete name, image and likeness; support of funding directed at the modernization of Interstate 81; pursuit of NYS support for new research and academic programming for emerging technologies such as quantum computing; support for policy and budget proposals that provide educational and employment benefits for  military veterans and their families; workforce development.


National advocacy

Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the national level:

Through the Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse University routinely carries out advocacy and engagement activities associated with sustainable public policies at the national level.


Educational advocacy and engagement activities include meeting with elected representatives and staff members in Congress, joint construction of legislation, pursuit of federal funding opportunities in support of sustainability, meeting with representatives of the U.S. Government Executive Branch departments and agencies on funding opportunities and proposed regulatory actions.   

Examples of Public policy sustainability issues/legislation the University has engaged on in the last 3 years include: Fiscal years 2023, 2024 and 2025 National Defense Authorization Acts - Energy, Installations and Environment sustainability research portfolio; CHIPS & Science
