A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

The literacy assessment was developed by a student intern working with Sustainability Management and the Office of Institutional Research. The survey consists of two main sections: Sustainability on Campus and Sustainability Literacy. It was adopted for the spring semester of 2023, and the student utilized the data for their senior thesis. 

The survey was reviewed and tooled through our Office of Institutional Research.

The survey was distributed through our Office of Institutional Research department. 

 


A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

Sustainability Management administered its first Sustainability on Campus and Literacy Survey between April 10 and April 23, 2023, to a random sample of Syracuse University students. 

 

The overall response rate: 9.6%



  • 8.4% undergraduates

 

  • 12.6%  graduates 

 

  • 7.6% law students

 

  • 9.1 College of Professional Studies (Online degrees and certificate) students

 


A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):

Reviewing the results of the literacy assessment approximately 50-76% of the respondents understood the material. 70% of respondents understood the answer to the following question:

 

Which of the following is the best example of environmental justice?

 

Answer - All stakeholders from an Indigenous community are involved in setting a quota for the amount of wood they can take from a protected forest next to their village.
