Need Based Assistance
There are many different options for part-time students who require need-based assistance to complete a degree at SU. We’ll help you locate every possible source of aid available to you, and the Financial Aid office will even estimate your financial aid eligibility before you formally apply for admission. The following need-based financial assistance scholarships, grants, and federal programs are available to part time undergraduate students enrolled at Syracuse University:

Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)
The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) was established by the New York State Legislature in 1969 to provide access to independent colleges and universities for economically and educationally disadvantaged students from New York State. Economic eligibility is based on state-mandated low-income guidelines. Academic criteria are determined by each HEOP institution. A student enrolled in HEOP does not meet the institution’s traditional admissions profile, but is a top performer from the high schools and academies that they attend. HEOP students must demonstrate that they are able to successfully compete at whatever institution they attend. There are no compromises in the admissions process. HEOP is an avenue through which any student meeting both academic and economic guidelines can obtain a bachelor’s degree.

High School for Leadership and Public Service (HSLAPS)
Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship, in collaboration with the New York City Board of Education, developed HSLAPS for high school students. The goal is to develop a generation of leaders from urban areas by providing a rigorous academic curriculum and opportunities for leadership and public service.

KIPP
Syracuse University partners with KIPP to offer a financial aid award package striving to meet the full need of students. The KIPP Foundation has public charter schools that operate in accordance with a license agreement with the Foundation. Students are from low-income families and are eligible for federal free or reduced-price meal program. KIPP’s goal is to support students as they navigate high school, prepare for college entry, and their college journey. KIPP teachers and leaders help students achieve their dreams by preparing them for a life of choices: which college to attend, which career path to pursue, and how to use their talents to contribute to their communities and improve the world.

SU Tuition Waiver Program: An Eligible Dependent who is matriculated and enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Syracuse University may apply to receive a tuition waiver. The waiver can be applied only to the minimum number of credit hours required for completion of the first baccalaureate degree. An Eligible Dependent enrolled in a combined baccalaureate/master's program will be limited to the minimum number of credits required for the equivalent of the baccalaureate degree.

Cash Grant Program – Eligible Dependents who are full-time undergraduate students and are matriculated into an Eligible Accredited Post-Secondary Institution of Learning may apply to have up to $1,250 per semester applied toward tuition charges. An Eligible Post-Secondary Institution of Learning is an institution that offers courses of study leading to an associate’s or baccalaureate degree and is accredited in the United States by an agency recognized by the University. Awards are made payable directly to the institution. The program is limited to a maximum of eight semesters. Summer Session courses are not available under the Cash Grant Program.

A brief description of notable policies or programs to support non-traditional students:

Syracuse University participates in all veterans’ education programs and is a Yellow Ribbon school. With Yellow Ribbon, Post 9/11 GI Bill students can receive additional funding so that required tuition and fees are covered.

Most 100% Yellow Ribbon-eligible veterans are able to complete their education at Syracuse without any out-of-pocket costs for tuition or fees. If you do not have enough remaining eligibility to complete your degree or need additional grant options for your dependents, Syracuse has financial aid available to help you. View the tuition reference sheet [PDF, 2MB].

Veterans eligible for the 100% Yellow Ribbon Program or Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Benefits also receive an annual $3,000 grant from Syracuse University to apply toward on-campus housing.
