A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:

The Student Association (SA) is the undergraduate student government. SA serves as students representative voice and focuses on initiatives to help make the undergraduate experience the best it can be.

Graduate Student Senate, GSO - The Senate is the highest decision-making body in the GSO. Comprised of representatives from academic programs across campus, it meets approximately monthly to debate and vote on many matters of importance, including calls for action to the university’s administration, funding for student organizations, and more.

University Board of Trustees - The Board of Trustees is the governing body of Syracuse University, responsible for the educational mission and fiscal policies of the University. Members of the Board guide the University toward its goals and vision and serve the public trust. This website is intended to provide information about the Board of Trustees to members of the Syracuse University community.

University Senate - The University Senate is the academic governing body of the University and is made up of faculty, students, staff, and administration members. Most of its work is done in the seventeen standing committees, which report to the full Senate at least once a year.

The University has several Barging Units:
- Department of Public Safety
- Service Employees' International Union Local 200, Service Employees’ International Union (SEIU) represents service, maintenance, and library technicians employed in the following departments: Bird Library (and its branches), Carrier Dome, Food Services, Housing & Food Service Maintenance, Law Library, Mail Services, Materials Distribution, Physical Plant, and the Steam Distribution Station.
- Teamsters Local 317, international Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 317, represents Syracuse University’s parking and transit services workers.
- Adjunct professors - Adjuncts United (AU) is affiliated with New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and represents most of Syracuse University’s part-time faculty.

The Office of Community Engagement seeks to ensure mutual access to learning, resources, service and supports through a bi-directional relationship with the City of Syracuse and its surrounding areas. The office is a liaison with neighborhood, community, business, and nonprofit organizations on matters pertaining to campus-community relationships.

Community engagement facilitates the creativity and discovery that is essential to academic excellence. It also ensures that the University contributes to the vibrancy and sustainability of the communities that encompass it.

The Office of Community Engagement provides students, faculty and staff with authentic engagement opportunities that allow them to interact with the world around them.

Thursday Moring Round Table - This weekly civic engagement program features experts speaking on local, state and national issues of concern to the Central New York community. The Thursday morning meetings, held during the academic year, feature a presentation about an issue or topic of general interest. After each presentation, the speaker holds a question-and-answer session. WCNY-FM, 91.3, broadcasts the programs on the following Sundays at 8 p.m.
