Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Snow Melt System Saves our Landscaping

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Syracuse University has installed Snow Melt systems to melt and clear our sidewalks and stairs without using corrosive snow melt chemicals.

The University has about 20 snow melt systems across the campus. These systems consist of a Steam to Glycol Heat Exchanger pumping glycol through a system of flexible piping installed in the slab, a common term for this piping is known as PEX. The systems are controlled, monitored, and alarmed by the campus Energy Management System. There are a few system that use condensate, however they are backed up by steam.

Utilizing this system has saved our landscaping from harsh snowmelt chemicals. In the past we would have to remove 5-6 inches of top soil and about 3 feet from the sidewalks of dead grass and soil and replace would have to replace each area with new turf every spring. With the new system we are not having to replace the turf and gardens in the areas of the Snow Melt Systems.
