A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:

Through the Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse University routinely carries out educational advocacy and engagement activities associated with sustainable public policies at the municipal level.

Educational advocacy and engagement activities include meeting with local elected representatives such as the Mayor of Syracuse, Members of the Syracuse Common Council; participation in and/or membership on various civic, community and neighborhood organizations and boards such as the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board, University Hill Corporation; establishment of shared services agreements with the City of Syracuse; hosting public forums; inviting sustainability experts to speak at campus events, submitting statements into the record at public hearings, making formal comments on proposed regulations and more.

Examples of public policy sustainability issues the University has engaged on in the last 3 years include: construction of private student housing, construction of new campus facilities such as the National Veterans Resource Center, renovation of the Syracuse University Stadium, renovation of the Schine Student Center; maintenance of Syracuse City parks and recreation areas; and local rezoning regulations in and around the Syracuse University campus.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:

Through the Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse University routinely carries out educational advocacy and engagement activities associated with sustainable public policies at the state level.

Educational advocacy and engagement activities include meeting with elected representatives and staff members in the New York State Assembly, New York State Senate, Office of the Governor and Lt. Governor and various NYS Executive Branch departments; construction of legislative proposals; providing information for legislative hearings; pursuit of funding opportunities that support sustainability academic programming, research and recapitalization of physical infrastructure.

Examples of public policy sustainability issues/legislation the University has engaged on in the last 3 years include: support for appropriate funding levels in the NYS budget for the Syracuse University Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems Innovation; support for full funding of the New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program; construction of legislation regarding monetization of student-athlete name, image and likeness; support of funding directed at the modernization of Interstate 81; pursuit of NYS support for new research and academic programming for emerging technologies such as quantum computing; support for policy and budget proposals that provide educational and employment benefits for military veterans and their families.

Through the Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse University routinely carries out advocacy and engagement activities associated with sustainable public policies at the national level.

Examples of Public policy sustainability issues/legislation the University has engaged on in the last 3 years include: Fiscal years 2020, 2021 and 2022 National Defense Authorization Acts - Energy, Installations and Environment sustainability research portfolio; The National Science Foundation For the Future Act; the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act (S.785) to increase veterans’ access to integrative health care and mental health services; The Department of Energy Science for the Future Act; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rule ""Strengthening Transparency in Pivotal Science underlying Significant Regulatory Actions and Influential Scientific Information; Implementation of Vacatur""; and the Department of Education Title IX rule amendment" "Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or Activities Receiving Federal"

A key partner for us in Washington, the Coalition is dedicated to sustaining the federal government’s investment in basic scientific research as a means to stimulate the economy, spur innovation and drive America’s global competitiveness.

Council on Government Relations: As a member of this organization we are invested in its mission to communicate at the federal level the impact of proposed regulations on colleges and universities. COGR helps to develop policies and practices that fairly reflect the mutual interests and separate obligations of federal agencies and universities in research and graduate education.
