In 2019, Swarthmore joined other institutions and businesses in Pennsylvania to urge state leaders to accelerate a low-carbon future. Specifically, the College and other signatories called on state lawmakers to enact market-based solutions to reduce carbon and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

Swarthmore has taken a leadership role in advocating for carbon pricing policy at the national level. This includes President Valerie Smith's endorsement and championing of the Put A Price On It campaign, which advocates for national carbon pricing legislation.

In 2017, President Valerie Smith joined over 180 leaders in higher education and over 1,000 leaders in the U.S. in declaring their intent to continue to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in reducing carbon emissions. The signatories of We Are Still In are delivering concrete emissions reductions that will help meet America’s emissions pledge under the Paris Agreement, despite the federal government’s decision to withdraw from this international climate accord.
