Total percentage of students (graduate and undergraduate) that use more sustainable commuting options as their primary means of transportation:
99

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

-The data we gathered regarding student commutes is based on the college fact book and our general knowledge and observations of student transportation patters, which are very apparent given the relatively small student body and the relatively small campus.
-Based on the college factbook numbers for 2016, 95% of students live on campus (including  students that were abroad since study abroad programs last 1 semester out of the year per student). All of these students walk, bike, or take the campus shuttle around campus and to and from dorms (while some own cars, seldom do these students drive around Swarthmore's relatively small campus). The remainder of the estimate is generalized but likely quite accurate: Most (likely 2%-4%) of the remaining 5% of students live in three "off-campus" housing options, none of which are further than just 1 block  from the campus. Beyond this, very few students (1%-2%) live in housing that is far off campus which would necessitate vehicular travel. Finally, of the extremely few that live far of campus (e.g. Philadelphia) they tend to take the Septa Regional Rail train to get to campus.

The percentage of students that use each of the following modes as their primary means of transportation to get to and from campus::
Percentage (0-100)
Commute with only the driver in the vehicle (excluding motorcycles and scooters) 1
Walk, bicycle, or use other non-motorized means 96
Vanpool or carpool 0
Take a campus shuttle or public transportation 2
Use a motorcycle, scooter or moped 1

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

The college provides on campus housing to 95% of its students. All students are full-time and 4-5% live in private housing in the Village of Swarthmore, which abuts the campus. The students living off-campus either walk, bicycle, or take a shuttle provided either by the college or a local apartment complex depending upon their residence.
