A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
The Green Advisors (GAs) are student fellows of the Office of Sustainability who work to encourage sustainable lifestyles among all Swarthmore community members. The GAs spearhead projects to advance campus sustainability, facilitate environmentally-friendly behaviors in the residence halls, manage the campus composting system, host engaging and educational all-campus events, produce resources to inform the community about best practices, and generally serve as peer leaders.
A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
Extensive application process that parallels the selection process for RAs. Students apply mid-spring through an essay based application. They need letters of recommendation. Each candidate is Interviewed. All GAs participate in a week long pre- freshmen orientation training. All GAs are placed residentially.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
Have a week of training prior to orientation. Week-long training that ranges from peer-leadership skills to training in specific sustainability topics: general peer leadership and understanding sustainability, campus specific topics (natural enviro., enviro justice, dining and food, and energy). GAs have meetings and trainings throughout the year.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
Student Pay + Training and orientation + General program cost = $50,000/year. Sustainability Program Manager is the main director for GA program while the Office of Sustainability and the President's Office also provide general support.
