A survey was sent to all faculty and department chairs asking for nominations for courses that "include sustainability" or are "sustainability courses." From initial responses, each department's offerings over 3 years was reviewed and verified with the faculty member or department chair. Professors Betsy Bolton, Carr Everbach, and Giovanna DiChiro verified the completion of the final inventory.

There are only 33 academic departments from which courses were counted. Although Athletics is considered a department (explaining by 34 departments are counted in IC 3) by the Registrar’s Office, courses offered by Athletics were not considered in our count of courses that were sustainability focused or contained topics concerning sustainability.
