Yes

A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

Hazardous waste at Swarthmore is managed by the Environmental Health and Safety Officer who works with a licensed handler (currently TIER) to collect it about twice a year. In 2010 the college disposed of 2.12 tons of hazardous waste at a cost of $12,069.30. Universal waste such as batteries and lightbulbs is collected primarily by the Maintenance department and also from collection bins accessible to the campus community. Computers and peripherals that are in good condition are sold off to be reused. Computers and peripherals that can no longer be used are collected by a certified vendor. Each year Swarthmore reviews electronic recycling vendors to ensure their proper handling of the materials.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

Materials collected for recycling include batteries, toner cartridges, computers, peripheral equipment, and consumer electronics. Departments that wish to dispose of computers need to call ITS and pay a $20 fee. ITS wipes the harddrives of computers and collects them to be picked up by a recycling vendor periodically.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :

Students who bring their computers to ITS to be fixed sometimes dispose of them. In that case ITS keeps the computer and recycles it along with the institutionally generated waste. Swarthmore does not specifically promote this service to students.
