Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Solar Array Landscape Management
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The SU Solar Array covers 14 acres at the Center for Environmental Education and Research. In the spirit of fossil free electrictiy generation, SU leases a flock of sheep from Owens Farm (a local sheep farm) to maintain the vegetation during the growing months instead of using lawn mowers and traditional land management techniques. The sheep are on site from April until November. The sheep were introduced in 2019 and returned in April 2020 for their second year. The solar array is broken down into smaller sections and rotational grazing techniques are employed to ensure the sheep are eating all vegetation not just their favorite varieties. We've hired several students to check on the sheep every day to ensure they're healthy. This has provided an opportunity for students to learn about sheep and how to take care of them.
