The Community Outreach aspect of the SU Strategic Plan for Sustainability has undertaken a focus on food security and hunger in the Snyder County area. We have studied the issue and realize a need for food 365 days/per year. Thus a Food Security Group has been formed and work is underway, as follows:
1) We have developed survey instruments for identifying sources of food available for needy people and are in the process of collecting these data.
2) We have secured the use of a large walk-in freezer at the Freshwater Initiative where food can be stored.
3) We have conducted community outreach with groups such as the Community Action Agency and St. Pius Church in order to coordinate efforts.
4) We are focusing on a plan to develop a Food Mobile service such as the Chuck Wagon effort in Shamokin. This will allow us to better match supply with demand and reach people in the rural reaches of Snyder County who are unable (or don't want to be seen) going to food banks.
