Buffalo State Univeristy is part of the State Univeristy of New York system, which has unions that make up almost all full and part time employees. These Unions collective bargain for the system as a whole with the State of New York. The unions do not bargain individually with each campus. The unions at Buffalo State are:
- United University Professionals (UUP) represents all professional staff and faculty
- CSEA represents classified employees
- Police Benevolent Association of New York State (PBANYS) represents Univeristy Police
- Graduate Assistant Employees Union (GSEU) represents graduate student workers
