3.1 Graduate programs with sustainability-focused learning requirements

1. Great Lakes Environmental Science MS
The master of science in Great Lakes Environmental Science program combines coursework in environmental science with communication and project management classes and an internship experience. The M.S. program is designed to meet the needs of industry, consulting firms, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and governmental agencies, preparing graduates for leadership roles as they address a wide range of problems and issues related to the management of resources within the Great Lakes and surrounding watersheds.

The following require a sustainability-focused course for all students in the program, and/or directly address a challenge articulated in the 17 UN SDGs.
1. Great Lakes Environmental Science MA
Catalog description:
The Master of Arts in Great Lakes Environmental Science program offers a strong foundation in environmental science and allows students to approach problems from a purely scientific perspective. Graduates are trained to effectively deal with a broad range of problems and issues related to ecosystem structure and function within the Great Lakes and surrounding watersheds, which prepares them for advanced research, professional employment, or study at the Ph.D. level.
Sustainability-focused course: GLC 535 Great Lakes Ecosystems
2. Adult Education M.S.
This program requires all students to take a sustainability-focused course, ADE 655 Diversity Issues in Adult Education and Training
3. Dietetics M.S.
The program focuses on many aspects of UN SDG 3 "Good Health and Wellbeing." To align with accreditation requirements, there are program-level learning sustainability outcomes and numerous sustainability-inclusive course requirements.
4. Conservation of Art and Cultural Heritage M.A./M.S.
The program is focused entirely on the sustainability challenge embodied in UN SDG 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities," specifically Goal 11.4 "Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage."

For graduation numbers, a 2-year yearly average from Fall 2021-spring 2023 was used. AY 2023-24 graduation data was not published at the time of submission.
The Dietetics M.S. programs' first graduates were in Spring 2024. This will be about 16 each year (the number is determined by accrediting body).
