Purpose: Stony Brook University is dedicated to having a positive impact on the natural environment and builds/maintains its facilities and exterior locations in the most sustainable manner possible. This commitment is an essential component of the University’s climate neutrality goals, which include a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases in 2020, based on 2008 levels and ultimately achieving climate neutrality in 2050. The purpose of this Sustainable Facilities New Construction / Operations & Maintenance Policy is to outline the University’s commitment to building and operating its facilities in a sustainable manner using the following U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems:

Policy: Stony Brook University is committed to building and operating its facilities in a sustainable manner using U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as a guideline. The following goals apply to University new construction and existing facility operations:
• New University construction projects have a minimum goal to achieve USGBC LEED Silver status, using LEED Building Design and Construction rating system as a guideline.
• Existing University facilities will be operated using the USGBC LEED Operations and Maintenance rating system as the guideline for incorporating sustainability into facilities management.
