EcoLeaders is a student leadership, peer education and sustainability guidance outreach program. Students work with campus sustainability leaders, communicate with various departments and create programs/ events that challenge peers to adopt a more sustainable behavior. Students also attend monthly meetings to learn about new University sustainability projects & initiatives. They communicate with other EcoLeaders in regards to sustainability and provide feedback to the campus community.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Interested students are asked to submit an application at the start of each Fall semester. Students from all class standings and academic majors are welcome to apply. The Office of Sustainability choose candidates, who show an interest in advancing sustainability on campus and in their communities. This can consist of extracurricular activities, course work, research interests, personal goals and student affiliations.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

The students are made aware of all sustainability related programs on campus and attend information sessions, which teach them about campus sustainability and how to communicate those goals, to the campus community.


A brief description of the financial or other support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

The university provides financial support to the program in the form of a salary that funds the Sustainability Coordinator, who is located in the Office of Sustainability and who coordinates EcoLeader activities. The Office also coordinates events and provides financial assistance to support EcoLeader initiatives.

EcoLeaders are selected using an annual, online application process. To be eligible, candidates must be current Stony Brook University students. They must complete an application that highlights their sustainability-related experience and major by October 15 of each year.

EcoLeaders receive training in the form of bi-weekly meetings, during the academic semester.
