A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:
Stony Brook University has created a network of outreach opportunities, to help all community members (students, faculty and staff) that wish to be involved, develop a greater appreciation for others; while building sustainable communities. Some of the incentives for students include, internships and positions within the sustainable enterprises such as the Sustainability Task Force, EcoLeaders, Transportation & Parking Advisory Group and the Farmers Market.

A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage faculty research in sustainability:
The Office of Sustainability supports faculty research efforts, that address issues of sustainability where possible. For faculty, grants such as the NSF grant for Sustainable Research and the FAHSS grant for Geo-spatial Science Grant are available to support research and sustainability on campus. Also, faculty conducting sustainability research have access to University facilities and/or partnering with the Centers of Excellence, to advance sustainability in their work. Additionally, the Office of Sustainability encourages faculty research within the university's Chemistry Department, with an ongoing Chemistry Solvent Recycling Program. In this program, waste solvent generated by the laboratories of Stony Brook Chemistry professors are brought to locations on campus, to be processed through a recycler. This process minimizes hazardous waste generation, disposal costs and reduces costs to the university.

Stony Brook University encourages interdisciplinary research collaboration. Collaboration is encouraged and facilitated through the university's Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Office of the Provost and specific programs in the Chemistry, Humanities and Social Sciences academic departments. Faculty are recognized for completing interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary and multidisciplinary research during an annual performance evaluation process; in which awards are issued by Stony Brook University.

A brief description of the institution's library support for sustainability research and learning:
The library staff provide support for interdisciplinary and sustainability research including presentations, direct assistance and specific collections. The library provides access to 41 data bases for Sustainability & Environmental Studies, as well as a Sustainability & Environmental Studies Expert. In addition, the library provides access to Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery, to support the research and teaching needs of the SBU community.
