Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
1. The Hugo Neu Corporation Sustainability Seminar Series is a weekly lecture organized by the sustainability management master’s program since fall 2016. The series is sponsored by the Hugo Neu Corporation, jointly sponsored by Geosyntec Consultants, and co-sponsored by Brown and Caldwell, H2M Architects and Engineers, Lozier Inc., The Catalyst Group and WSP. Organizers typically host about 12 speakers per semester.
- Sample presentations from the spring 2023 semester include:
- ESG – Beyond Sustainability
- Navigating the Sustainability and Green Careers Landscape
- Living Shorelines in NJ: A Decade of Progress
- Sustainability at the Hudson County Improvement Authority
- The Challenge of Circular Economy as the New Worldwide Economic Model
- Beyond Energy and Emissions: The Global Charcoal Supply Chain
The seminar is open to Stevens faculty, staff and students and is live webcast for those who are unable to attend in person. It is a required course for students in the Sustainability Management graduate program.
2. Despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, the Office of International Programs continued to offer study abroad opportunities for students. Staff moved quickly to approve four different study abroad provider programs that they have worked with for years, including Academic Programs International (API), Center for International Studies (CIS) Abroad, International Studies Abroad (ISA) and The Education Abroad Network (TEAN). Staff emailed students about internship opportunities, hosted several webinars and promoted the various scholarships and grants that were available.
One of the virtual study abroad opportunities focused on sustainability by including a virtual engineering internship in Ecuador with placements at Intillacta Reserve to analyze and compile weather station data and Robots Crate on a solar tree project to develop a carbon dioxide sequestration system.
