A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive experience(s) offered by the institution:
Stetson University offers one formal, semester-long course for Environmental Science majors to pursue full-time internships. Last year, these internship experiences included farming experience at a local, organic practice farm, species regeneration at Bok Tower Gardens State Park, Technicians for the Volusia County Dept. of Environmental Management, and Research associate with the Save the Manatee Club. This program gives students the opportunity to witness and learn in-depth about sustainability challenges and solutions. These programs provide a memorable way for students to deepen and expand their knowledge of sustainability and utilize sustainability as a lens to examine an issue/topic of the student’s choice.
Stetson also offers a summer internship with the Alliance for International Reforestation. Students work with this NGO in Central America to replant trees, build capacity for fuel wood conservation by constructing efficient wood burning stoves with community members, and building local capacity through establishing community nurseries and educational outreach institutions.
