Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Launch of the School of the New American Farmstead
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2016, Sterling College launched the School of the New American Farmstead (SNAF). SNAF's mission is to offer continuing education in integrated, community-centered farming and food production. SNAF's inaugural year offered a variety of workshops, classes, and certifications that sought to inspire and educate agrarians, culinarians, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners.
Sterling College has one of the oldest collegiate farms in the country, and its Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainable Food Systems degrees are both rigorous and cutting-edge. SNAF brings that expertise in ecological farming and craft-food production to people who don't wish to commit to a full 4-year degree.
Some of the courses that SNAF offered were:
Fundamentals of Artisan Cheese, with the Cellars at Jasper Hill
Food Writing from the Farm, with Ruth Reichl, Clark Wolfe, Kim Severson, and more
Artisan Bread Making, with Richard Miscovich
Small Batch Brewing, with Shaun Hill of Hill Farmstead
Holistic Orcharding, with Michael Phillips
The Art of Fermentation, with Sandor Katz
