A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :

1) At the bi-annual orientation check-In, all new students are given a worksheet on sustainability and sustainability efforts at ESF. Staff members from the ESF Sustainability Division also speak to all new students during an orientation session. The sustainability efforts covered in orientation are presented in the context of social, environmental, and economic aspects of sustainability, as well as relevant curriculum, research, and extra curricular programs related to sustainability that students can participate in while attending ESF.

2) Students are also given a free, collapsible bowl to use at all events at ESF to be waste free, sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Association (the student government); thus, the concept of bringing your mug, cups, utensils, etc. is instilled immediately at ESF.

3) During orientation, all new students are required to participate in the "Saturday of Service," and faculty and staff are invited to attend as well. Throughout the day, participants hear from a speaker (typically focused on a sustainability concept), perform outdoor cleanup, remove invasive species at parks around Syracuse, and engage in other similar service activities.

4) Also during orientation, the College's Sustainable Facilities Manager hosts an in-person (or virtual via Blackboard) session about sustainability initiatives at ESF, as well as providing sustainable living tips. The Sustainable Facilities Manager is also invited to the Graduate Student Colloquium to provide an overview of key facilities topics (classroom cleaning and disinfecting, vehicle reservations and work orders) as well as sustainability programs.
