A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
Through the study abroad office, students have the opportunity to explore Israel and receive intimate education regarding environmental studies at The Arava Institute. Located 30 minutes from Eilat, Israel in the Arava Valley, this school is nationally renowned for inclusivity, diversity and tolerance. The Arava Institute offers students an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in a cross-cultural environment with others who are equally passionate about building a more sustainable future. No other program in the Middle East brings together students from such varied political, cultural, and religious backgrounds to live, study, and learn from one another. In this multicultural setting, students form personal connections and develop skills that enable them to lead their communities to address today’s most pressing environmental challenges. Subject areas include environmental science, geological and earth sciences/geosciences, natural resources conservation and research, peace studies and conflict resolution, sustainability studies, & sustainable development.
In the Spring of 2023, SUNY Oneonta's Environmental Sustainability & Geography Department will be offering students an opportunity to accompany certain professors to the archipelago of Hawaii in Geography of U.S. Islands and Territories (Hawaii). This applied learning approach will allow students to uptake area specific information, such as culture & environmental hurdles, surrounding this island chain in a hands on manner. Additionally, each individual will bolster their relationships with their professors and peers. The total trip time is still undetermined, however it will be over one week in time and provide one credit to those who attend.
