A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:

This sustainability literacy assessment draws from questions from other higher education institutions' sustainability literacy assessments as well as questions developed and generated by SUNY New Paltz faculty and staff. It was developed during the summer of 2018 and first distributed in the fall of 2018.

A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :

The Office of Institutional Research sent the sustainability literacy assessment to all students via email in the fall of 2018 to establish a baseline (N=602). The survey was sent to new students in January of 2020 (N=126). It was sent to graduating students via email in the spring of 2019 (N=12) and the spring of 2022 (N=477).

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):

Pre-test answers from both pre-test assessment years (2018 and 2020) as a whole were compared to the graduating students (from 2019 and 2022) post-test answers. In the pre-tests, students on average answered the questions correctly 72 percent of the time. In the post-tests, graduating students answered the questions correctly 70% of the time, a slight decrease. Over 95% of students are in agreement with climate scientists that CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels and other sources causes climate change.
