A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

Since 2012, Gerald Benjamin and Kathleen (KT) Tobin of the Center for Research, Regional Education, and Outreach have both represented SUNY New Paltz, serving on the steering committee, for the Mid-Hudson Regional Sustainability Plan consortium.

This planning effort was funded as part of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Cleaner, Greener Communities program. The process, led by the Commissioner of Planning in Orange County and Commissioner of Community Development & Conservation in the Town of Greenburgh, included representatives from the Mid-Hudson Region of New York State, the seven counties located immediately north of New York City (NYC): Westchester County, Rockland County, Orange County, Putnam County, Dutchess County, Ulster County, and Sullivan County.

The Mid-Hudson Regional Sustainability Plan was developed through extensive research and a consensus building process open to stakeholders from throughout the region. This process was overseen by a planning consortium consisting of senior representatives of the region’s seven counties as well as government and non-governmental organizations. The plan sets out a vision for sustainable development that builds on the region’s unique social, cultural, and natural history, with the goal of promoting economic development, environmental sustainability, and enhancing quality of life for the more than two million residents that call our region home. By engaging hundreds of stakeholders from each of our region’s seven counties in the development of the plan, a series of objectives has been established that reflects our region’s diverse landscapes, demographics, economy, culture, and history.

The plan is available at this website:
