SUNY Cortland Sustainability Coalition: This committee meets monthly to discuss, coordinate, and collaborate on sustainability initiatives. The coalition also proposes new initiatives and helps to locate funding to support. The coalition is made up of a variety of campus representatives including faculty and staff ranging in leadership, residence life and public relations.

Campus Model Garden Advisory Commitee - charged with the responsibilities of maintaining the gardens, coordinating educational programs around the topics of gardens, facilitating educational use of college gardens in classroom activities, and Coordinate the College's Bee Campus USA activities.

Responsibilities  

  • Create and help maintain gardens and edible landscaping in consultation with Facilities Management. 
  • Integrate garden and edible landscaping planning into the College’s Sustainability, Climate Action, and Facilities Master Plans in consultation with Facilities Management. 
  • Coordinate educational programs around the topics of gardens and edible landscaping. 
  • Facilitate educational use of college gardens in classroom activities, service-learning, and interactions with the community. 
  • Organize faculty, staff, students, and community members to assist with gardening. 
  • Coordinate the College's Bee Campus USA activities. 

Green Ambassadors Program  for SUNY Cortland Faculty and Staff

The SUNY Cortland Green Ambassadors Program is designed to support a more sustainable campus by involving faculty and staff representatives to engage in generating new ideas, establishing new partnerships, and sharing information about sustainable practices both at work and home.

Green Ambassador meetings are held 1-2 times each semester. These meetings will include sessions on campus sustainability initiatives, tours of sustainable features on campus and in the community, and opportunities to discuss ideas and collaborate on solutions to the challenges we face on campus and in the surrounding community.

Ambassador Expectations:

  • attend 1-2 meetings/workshops per semester
  • educate colleagues on available resources, initiatives, events, and other sustainability information
  • encourage sustainable actions
  • serve as a liaison between the Campus Sustainability Coalition and your colleagues
  • assist in promoting campus sustainability initiatives and events

Ambassador Opportunities:

  • collaborate and network with colleagues from across campus to facilitate positive change
  • gain access to a variety of sustainability tools and resources
  • play a key role in shaping the campus and workplace environment
  • provide a meaningful service to the College
  • eligible to apply for a $100 grant to implement a “green” project in your office/department

Energy and Sustainability Engagement Coordinator - A full time position reporting to the Campus Energy Manager and provide leadership and support in addressing our University-wide Sustainability reporting and commitments; manage campus sustainability communications (website, social media, newsletters); Promote on campus and community sustainability engagement, coordinate student, faculty and staff programs, develop and encourage campus-wide sustainability events, and collaborate with the local community on sustainability initiatives.

Description of each sustainability office:

Energy Management Office - Energy Management office consists of a full-time Campus Energy Manager. This office is housed in facilities, and focuses on sustainability applications in energy and the facilities division works closely with the Sustainability Office staff and supports other campus and community based sustainability initiatives. 

Sustainability Office: Includes A Sustainability Coordinator (faculty member) and a full time Energy and Sustainabilty Engagement Coordinator (staff). Office provides a point of contact for campus and community members, works closely with the Campus Energy Manager, and provides support for sustainability programming, communication, and initiatives for campus and the community.

Job Description:
The Campus Energy Manager is responsible for energy use, procurement, energy reduction initiatives, and providing guidance to campus buildings operations and management of the buildings through DDC/BMS systems.

The major responsibilities of this position will include monitoring and analyzing campus energy consumption, compiling energy budgets, providing guidance for campus HVAC operations, Electrical Trades, addressing campus short, intermediate, and long term carbon reduction goals, performing campus energy audits, overseeing energy system commissioning, retro-commissioning, and pursuing energy grant opportunities.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree; experience in energy management, facilities management, and/or energy system design; effective interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with all members of the campus community; strong customer service orientation; strong oral and written communication skills; strong analytical and problem solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an Energy, Sustainability, Engineering or Management discipline; ability to read building plans; knowledge of utility rate/tariff structures; working knowledge of architectural software such as AutoCAD; experience conducting energy audits; experience with Building/Energy Management and Control Systems operations; knowledge of HVAC systems, steam and hot water boilers, and chillers

Campus Sustainability Coordinator

The Campus Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for general sustainability coordination with a focus on sustainability curriculum, research and outreach.

The major responsibilities of this position include working closely with the Campus Energy Manager on sustainability initiatives, sustainability assessments (STARS, Second Nature, etc.), implementation of campus sustainability plans, coordination of outreach programs and publications/social media, support for curriculum and research projects, and coordination of the Green Ambassadors Faculty/Staff Liaison program.

Position is designed for a faculty member and is a quarter-time reassignment for each semester, equivalent of 1, 3-credit course load for each semester.

Job Description 

The Energy & Sustainability Engagement Coordinator will report to the Campus Energy Manager and provide leadership and support in addressing our University-wide Sustainability reporting and commitments; manage campus sustainability communications (website, social media, newsletters); Promote on campus and community sustainability engagement, coordinate student, faculty and staff programs, develop and encourage campus-wide sustainability events, and collaborate with the local community on sustainability initiatives. This position may also provide support related to energy initiatives, including grant and rebate submissions. 

The major responsibilities of this position will include supporting and implementing university-wide sustainability including logistical support to various energy and sustainability committees, program development and engagement initiatives, maintaining the sustainability website and newsletter, mentoring student environmental leaders, supervising student interns for the Sustainability Office and providing direct support to the Campus Energy Manager related to implementing programs and training.  

 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 6 months experience facilitating and/or leading group program initiatives. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field supporting sustainability, outreach, program management, or related. 
  • Supervisory experience. 
  • Direct work experience within a sustainability focused organization. 
  • Experience with building systems including HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, power, equipment, laboratories, processes, metering, and building automation. 
  • Experience with utility grant and rebate programs, examples include: NYSERDA, National Grid, NYSEG, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency.
