Description of the institution’s participation in sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions:

SUNY Cortland regularly collaborates with offices of Sustainability within the SUNY System, the SUNY Sustainability Coalition (SSC). There are various online presentations, meetings and working groups throughout the year in which sustainability related employees within the SUNY system present and meet to talk about different sustainability initiatives specific to state universities within New York (such as Executive Order 32 and 22) and other topics which are universally relatable across campuses. SUNY Sustainability working groups have met to discuss the intersection of DEI and Sustainability and how to streamline reporting specific to food amongst the various reports. Topics of discussion have included what campus Sustainability offices can do to better support DEI initiatives and how to balance the requirements of different state executive orders and other sustainability initiates campuses are following.  The other state level group is New York Coalition for Sustainability in Higher, NYCSHE, including both public and private universities. The New York Coalition for Sustainability in Higher Education (NYCSHE) unites New York campuses to promote sustainable practices throughout their universities. This organization brings together members from higher education communities who share interests and expertise to benefit sustainability policies, practices, and physical development. This group met in 2023 at RIT for a conference.

July 2023 - SUNY Cortland presented at the New York State Conference of the Association for Phyiscal Plant Administrators (APPA) about creating, implementing and administring a clean energry master plan.

Description of institution’s sustainability-focused articulation/transfer agreements:

Cooperative Admission Agreement with Duke University for a Master of Environmental Management or Master of Forestry

  • The Cooperative College Program (3/2 Program) of Duke University for and on behalf of its 
    Nicholas School of the Environment ("Duke") is designed to coordinate the education of 
    students in selected undergraduate schools with graduate programs in the broad area of natural 
    resources and environmental studies offered at Duke. The program provides a unique 
    combination of liberal and professional education well suited for those desiring to enter the 
    professional field of environment consulting, sustainability, conservation, marine sciences, 
    natural resources and related environmental fields.
  • Students may enter the Duke Nicholas School of the Environment after three years of 
    undergraduate study or upon completion of the baccalaureate.

Description of the institution’s sustainability mentoring activities:

Megan Swing, Energy and Sustainability Engagement Coordinator, is in a higher education sustainability support group with fellow sustainability professionals who are alumni of her alma mater Allegheny College. This group is lead by Kelly Boulton, Director of Sustainabilty at Allegheny College. It includes alumni Megan Swing, Molly Tarvin, Sustainability Coordinator at Mercyhurst University and Rachel Willis, Sustainability Willis, Sustainability Coordinator and Reed College.

 

Matt Brubaker is part of a group of Energry Managers within higher education, both public and private instutions, including Commission of Indepdent Colleges and Universtities in New York (CICU). 

 

SUNY Cortland serves in a mentoring capacity (both giving and reciving mentorship) to other SUNY's. 
 
SUNY Cortland is part of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSDERA)'s Strategic Energy Management program. Other SUNY institutions, Geneseo, Oswego and Oneonta are also part of this program to implement a comprehensive approach to aligning energy efficiency with business practices and goals to achieve long-term benefits. Through this program SUNY Cortland has been able to collaborate, mentor and be mentored by the other SUNYs involved as we develop a strategic energy management plan.

Matt Brubaker has served on the advisory committee for the large scale renewable energy procurement project.
